Berden Social Club was formed in 1971 after the closure of Berden's last pub, The Raven. It's object, as enshrined in the constitution, is "to provide such facilities for the benefit of members, and their guests, as may be required by members for the enjoyment and promotion of social and sporting activities." This rather dry phraseology in no way reflects the atmosphere at Social Club gatherings! The club is open every Friday night in Berden Village Hall from 8.30pm. There is a licensed bar, manned by social club members, and typical pub games such as pool or snooker, darts, table tennis, etc., are available for those who want to do something more energetic than sit around the fire putting the world to rights. The Club also organises a wide variety of events throughout the year, some on Friday evenings, such as quiz nights or gastronomic evenings, and bigger attractions on Saturdays, such as the Midsummer Ball or Barn Dance, the Progressive Supper, Valentine's Dance, and Bonfire Night. There is a patio area outside the hall, which is used on some Friday evenings or Sunday lunchtimes in the summer for family barbeques. |
