The Berden Marathon 2009, Sunday 26th April 2009 - 9.30am Print E-mail
John Tippett has decided (must be mad) to run a Berden Marathon of 26.2 miles to raise money for cancer charities. So far he has completed a successful training run of 18 miles and will have run well over 1,000 miles in preparation. Why a Marathon ? John said that combining the feeling of helplessness as a dear friend fights her cancer and a long time desire to run a marathon could hopefully be combined to turn the helplessness into something more positive. Why ‘The Berden Marathon’?   He couldn’t get a place in the London Marathon so why not? Read on----..

The route in three legs

He will start from outside his home, 13 St Nicholas Field at 0930 on Sunday April 26th. He will then run out toward Furneux Pelham, turning right at The Wash and around Furneux Pelham past the Church then turn left to the Braughing Road. Back to the main road and turn left again to Berden via Stocking Pelham (7 miles). The second leg will be out through Little London. Turn left towards Clavering. Turn right and follow the road to Rickling. Turning left onto the Newport Road he will run to Newport turning left so as to run through Wicken Bonhunt, and Clavering before returning via Little London to Berden again  (14 miles).  The third and final leg will be out to Stocking Pelham past the Church to the Buntingford / Newport  Road. He will touch the first signpost on the right and return to Berden via Stocking Pelham. (5.2 miles)  (26.2 miles altogether).

Charity Choices

He said that as Cancers charities are so all pervading he would give contributors the choice of which charity to support. It can be for research, for treatments, or for care. Stephen Griffiths has kindly offered to help account for the donations.   Your pledge is what is important at this point. Telephone 777446 or put a slip through his front door with details on the amount you would like to pledge, whether or not you are a tax payer and the name of your cancer charity.

 Want to join him?

John will be delighted if anyone wants to join him for the full marathon or any of the legs.  Remember though there are none of the sophisticated arrangements expected at the London Marathon so it will be at your own risk! If you don’t feel totally prepared what about supporting him along the route and particularly at the start and finish?

Good luck John. Tongue out
